The Kibbutz
Erez is a Kibbutz situated just 700 meters North of the Gaza strip. It boasts approximately 600 residents and is renowned for its focus on entrepreneurship. Some even call it the "Star of the Negev Desert." Unfortunately, like all the Kibbutzim surrounding Gaza, it was targeted by Hamas terrorists on October 7th 2023. Despite the attack, Erez heroically defended itself until it was rescued and forced to evacuate by the IDF. Tragically, one of its members lost their life.
Today, two-thirds of the community has relocated to Mitzpe Ramon, while the rest are dispersed throughout Israel. However, Erez is determined to remain a resilient community, save its various businesses, including startups, an advanced thermoplastic factory producing high-tech textiles, and farming activities. Before the war, there was a long waiting list of families hoping to join the Kibbutz.
The Story of Erez
The kibbutz was founded in 1949 by a group of Palmach members who fought for the establishment of the state of Israel. A few dozen people realized that settling by the border will determine the future of the new state.
Over the years, the kibbutz developed strong connections with volunteers, Jewish communities, and visitors from around the world.
The kibbutz is proud of its sons and daughters, among them a previous IDF Chief of Staff, and current military, industrial, and financial leaders of Israeli society. The story of Kibbutz Erez is woven into the narrative of the miracle of Israel.
What happened on October 7 2023

At 6:30 a.m., a massive rocket barrage hit Kibbutz Erez and nearby border cities. The resilient First Response team, comprising dedicated volunteers, swiftly confronted terrorists attempting to infiltrate the kibbutz. A fierce battle ensued at the high observation post, joined by neighboring kibbutz's response team. Together, they demonstrated Arevut Hadadit (mutual responsibility), enabling continued combat and safe evacuations. The battle lasted three arduous hours, resulting in the tragic loss of Amir Naim, the kibbutz factory CEO's son. Three team members remain hospitalized. Their heroic sacrifice to protect Erez is profoundly inspiring.
